"Art is not what you see, but what you make others see" - Edgar Degas
Our Vision for Art
At St Matthew’s Primary school, our school vision is to encourage all children to flourish spiritually, morally, emotionally, physically and intellectually in all aspects of life demonstrating perseverance and resilience; this is emulated across all curriculum areas.
Intent:
At St Matthews we understand that Art is an important part of the human experience, allowing us to develop self-expression through a range of different contexts, mediums, and processes.
• We want Art to inspire children to reflect both creatively and critically about the world around them.
• Children should be encouraged to reflect on their own context at the community level but also through a range of multicultural and historical contexts.
• Our Art Curriculum enables children to develop a range of technical skills but also self-reflective and evaluative skills through the exploration of Artists, craft makers, designers, and Architects.
• We wish to instil a sense of wonder about the world through inspiring and stimulating topics.
• At St Matthews we aspire for our pupils to become competent, highly skilled artists. To achieve this, we aim to develop children’s capacity to create and shape their ideas alongside advancing their technical skill in drawing, working with colour, printing, sculpture, textile, and collage.
Implementation:
At St Matthew’s, we teach From Nursery through to Year 6. The school uses the Access Art scheme of work to support the teaching and learning of Art. This scheme provides clear progression for the development of….
We base the teaching on the 2014 National Curriculum delivered via the Access Art scheme. We have adapted this to the context of our school. This provides teachers with clear progression grids and content for teaching and learning.
• Through using the Access Art scheme of work as the basis for planning, teachers can deliver a sequence of core learning where skills are developed, and progression is clear.
• All staff and pupils are clear about what it is that they are learning and can see how previous learning is being built upon.
• Art at St Matthews is taught in four week blocks throughout the year, so that children can achieve depth in their learning.
• The art lead at St Matthews has identified the key knowledge and skills of each blocked topic and these are mapped across the school, ensuring that knowledge builds progressively, and skills are taught systematically.
• Cross curricular outcomes in Art are specifically identified and planned for, such as art for mental health week or arts and crafts in interfaith week.
• The art provision is well resources and specific resources are mapped to specific year groups and topics to support effective teaching and learning.
• School trips and visitors is an area we intend to develop to maximise the children’s first hand experiences and to give a meaningful context to their learning.
Impact:
Through the high quality first teaching of Art taking place, we will see the impact of the subject in the following ways:
• Children using a range of materials creatively to design and make products.
• Our learners will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to help them express themselves effectively and think creatively and critically about the world around them.
• Children will use drawing, painting and sculpture to develop and share their ideas, experiences and imagination. Reflecting on what they observe and how this it makes them feel about the world around them.
• Children will develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space.
• Children will know about the work of a range of artists, craft makers and designers, describing the differences and similarities between different practices and disciplines, and making links to their own work.
• Children will create their own sketch books to record their observations and use them to review,
revisit and reflect ideas.
• Children’s mastery of art and design techniques, including drawing, painting and sculpture with a range of materials.
• Their skills and knowledge will develop progressively as they move through the school to enable them to meet the requirements of the National Curriculum and will enable them to be fully equipped for the next stage of their learning journey.
• The children will be able to discuss their learning and demonstrate their knowledge and understanding through a range of activities.
• The children’s learning is assessed against the age-related expectations from the 2014 National
