St Matthew's go Wild for Maths

On Tuesday 5th April 2022, we held a Maths Day across the whole school. All children were involved in fun and engaging maths activities and the topic for the day was money. Children learning a range of monetary skills such a counting money, recognising coins to designing and costing recipes and budgeting and planning their end of year parties. It was a fantastic day’s fun and it was well received by the staff and children. Across Years 2, 3 and 4 children made a range of goods and sold these on the playground to other children and parents raising over £120. They have chosen to donate this to charities in the Ukraine to help the people who are suffering. Here are some quotes from the children:

Nursery

Nursery learnt the song Hot Cross buns.

We visited Mrs Vaughan’s hot cross bun shop, giving her a penny so that we could taste a hot cross bun.

They were very tasty! Yummy!!! :)

R1SG Class

Today we took part in a day of maths themed fun linked to the topic of money. We learned a range of skills and knowledge:

  • The value of coins
  • Coin recognition
  • How to make equivalent amount using a range of coins
  • We used the coins to purchase items from the shop.
  • We made Easter corn flake cakes and biscuits following a simple recipe

12CB Class

Today we have been learning about money. This morning, as groups we sorted the coins into different groups like colour, size and shape. Our train tickets were £1 so we needed to combine a variety of coins to make the total. This afternoon, we went on a great treasure hunt and we had to answer the maths based questions to get the next clue. On the KS2 playground Daniel found the treasure! We came back and had our beach party. We were each given an amount and we all needed to pay for each item using correct coins or combination of coins. We've had an awesome, fantastic day and we have learned lots of new things.

2ES Class

This morning we worked in groups to decide what ingredients we were going to buy from the shop to make fairy cakes. We had a budget of £5 and had to decide as a team which toppings we could afford to buy. Then we measured out our ingredients using grams. We took it in turns to mix the ingredients together and put our cakes into a baking try that looked like an array. In the afternoon we decorated out cakes with the toppings we brought in the morning such as icing and colourful stars. We then worked out how much profit we were going to make if we sold every cake for 50p. After that, we made poster and bunting based off the Ukraine flag as that is what we were raising the money for. Some of us sold the cakes at the end of the day to other children and parents. 3HF Class

Today in 3HF we planned a picnic for our group using a budget. We were given a budget of £5 and we had to buy food and drink for our picnic. We looked at three supermarkets and had to decide which was the best price before buying to get the most for our money. We had to decide what we could afford in our groups. In the afternoon, we brought the items and had our picnic.

"We have learnt how to spend our money on a budget" - Shantel

"We used our knowledge of pounds and pennies. We remembered that £1 is the same as 100 pennies." - Christodia

"We learnt that if you don't have a budget, you might overspend." - Charlie

34SW Class

During our maths fun day, we set ourselves the task of making cheesecakes to sell to parents and students in order to raise money for Ukraine.

We began the day by exploring the recipe, weighing out the ingredients, converting the units of measure on the digital scales was also a challenge. We then worked as a team to make the cheesecakes, ensuring we had made enough in order to make a profit.

Then we took part in exploring mathematical reasoning questions based upon our recipe, converting units of measure further, calculating how much we would to halve, double or quadruple the ingredients etc. We also, calculated how much profit we could possibly make if we sold a range of different amounts and for different prices, for if we sold 90 cheesecakes for £1:00 each compared to if we sold them for 70p, 60p 50p etc

We took part in mindfulness activities during the afternoon, creating bunting to decorate our stall, we had to ensure our bunting was decorated with symmetrical images!

Our class thoroughly enjoyed this day and discovered how challenging it actually is setting up a small business and actually making it profitable.  Using real money in a real life context was so rewarding!

45KS Class

On Maths Day, Year 4/5KS took part in a number of activities.  Our class chose to raise money for Ukraine.  For completing activities like a maths quiz along, we managed to raise £36.75.  At the end of the day, we set up what we had made during the day on the KS1 playground.  We sold our crafts and cakes to the parents of Year 4/5KS.  One of our favourite activities was the maths scavenger hunt where we were given maths questions and clues to find the next clue.

6BJ Maths Fun Day – Prom Planning!

For our Maths fun day, we tackled planning our pro for the end of the year. Mr Jackson had been boggling his mind looking at all the options, so he called on us for help. We had all sorts of practical challenges to figure out, from finding out the perimeter of the venue so Mr Jackson knew how much bunting to buy to the hourly cost of the DJ.

Helpfully, Mr Jackson gave lots of the costs to us in the form of algebraic formulae, so we had to put our maths heads on to find out how much each of the options would cost! We had to consider what we definitely needed to have to make the prom a success and what we could possibly go without to save money. It was a real challenge, but we worked in groups to tackle the really hard maths and find the solutions!
